The Story
Goal 54 (G54) makes its debut in June 2018 as the third installation of our Hybrid collection series following the critically acclaimed Score for Unity (SFU) collection launched 4 years prior (i.e. 2014). Goal 54 follows the same continental driven design concept as SFU to support Team Africa during the 21st edition of the World Soccer Championships held in Russia (June 14 - July 15, 2018).
While SFU focused on Africa’s solidarity, Goal 54 aims to answer the question of what’s next for Africa post continental unity? Inspired by honorable Marcus Garvey’s vision of building a strong black nation in Africa, Goal 54 aims to echo the message to all Africans around the world through the 2018 tournament, to unite under one common goal; to build Africa.
“We want every [African] to work for one common object, that of building a nation of his own on the great continent of Africa.”
If You Believe the [African] Has a Soul: Back To Africa -- Marcus Garvey, 1921
The front design displays an architectural illustration of Garvey’s famous headshot captured during the big parade at the 1920 United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) International Convention at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. Listed in the collar of his shirt are the five qualified countries (Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia) representing Africa at the tournament and, through whom we’re pushing the #BuildAfrica agenda.
Underneath and rightly opposite Garvey’s illustration highlights a goal celebration by Team Africa, but metaphorically a celebration of achieving Garvey’s vision.
The left sleeve further reinforces the #BuildAfrica message bearing the color black and Goal 54 badge.
The back design replaces the traditional jersey style of having a player’s name and number, by rather highlighting the collection name, Goal 54 to boldly pledge one’s allegiance to the #BuildAfrica movement.
